This is a list of
basic medicines and first-aid items
which should be kept in readiness to
treat minor illnesses and injuries
around the home. They need replacing
at regular intervals.
Keep them in a box or cupboard with
a lock - or store them well out of
the reach of children.
Paracetamol Tablets
For the relief of pain e.g. headache
and fever.
Paracetamol Mixture (e.g.
Calpol, Disprol, Calpol Six Plus)
For the relief of pain and fever in
children.
Soluble Aspirin And Nurofen
Tablets
These have an anti-inflammatory
action (unlike paracetamol) so are
more effective in the relief of
colds, flu, backache, sore throat,
period pains etc. They should not be
taken if you suffer from indigestion
or have an ulcer.
NB: do not give aspirin to children
under 16 years old.
Cough Linctus
For relief of dry or tickly coughs.
Thermometer/Fever Scan
To determine level of fever.
Anti-diarrhoea Tablets For Adults
(e.g. Imodium, Arret)
For relief of travellers' diarrhoea,
“gastric flu” and food poisoning.
Dioralyte or Rehidrat
For treatment of diarrhoea,
especially in children.
Calamine Lotion
For dabbing onto sunburn, insect
bites, irritating rashes and stings.
Small Cotton Bandages, Sticky
Plaster And Scissors
For cuts and abrasions.
7.5cm Crepe Bandage And Sticky
Plasters
For sprains, bruised joints, keeping
dressings in place, etc.
Cotton Wool
To clean cuts and grazes.
Antiseptic Lotion Solution (e.g.
Savlon, Dettol)
To clean dirty cuts and grazes.
Tweezers
To remove splinters.
Karvol, Olbas Oil Or Similar
For use in a steamy inhalation to
ease harsh or irritable coughs.
